Street Outlaws: Good or Bad for racing?

Street Outlaws is a show about illegal street racing and it has created quite the controversy in the world of drag racing today. The show has become a huge success and is now on its fourth season with more coming. Discovery channel must be doing something right because they have obtained more viewers on average than the broadcasts on ESPN for the professional races sanctioned by the NHRA. Is this the future of racing or is that people as a whole would rather watch a reality TV show where the product shown on TV could be fake or it could be real.
The thing that works for Street Outlaws is that most grass roots racers can relate to the show and they can build a car just like the ones on the show in their own garage. Knowing this, is there going to be a lot more people trying to tear up the streets on the weekend during this upcoming summer. Street racing has always been an illegal activity that has been going on since we figured out how to make our cars faster. It was really popular in the 50’s and 60’s and now Street Outlaws is playing a part in bringing it back. There has been a slew of videos and websites added online to help fuel the fire that Street Outlaws has started. Many feel the show gives racing a bad name because it is done on the street (on a close course, with sanctions of course) but there are also people that believe it helps. My personal feeling is that it is good for racing since all the huge sponsors have taken over NHRA and to be competitive means you need a million dollar race program. Street Outlaws is one of the best things that has happened to drag racing in years and I am excited for more episodes to come. Especially when the cars that are being built are getting faster and faster each year.
